Working in I.T. Support I tend to get a number of questions about broadband... which isn't much use as I don't actually have it.

So here's a chance to put your questions to people who do have broadband. For those of you who do have broadband feel free to post the advantages you have enjoyed because of your broadband supplier.

My first question would be this: If you get broadband do you have to keep an account with an ISP as well, or do you get that bundled in with the line rental?

When I eventually do get it I'll be looking for unlimited access. If anyone has any recommendations in this regard I'd be interested to read them.

i have a 700K broadband account with NTL.

It is unlimited.

I have no other costs than ?24.99 per month which includes my telephone line rental as well.

Advantages? upload sppeds of 512k? Downloads of very nearly 700K.

Need I say more?

You could - I'm not sure I've ever heard anything complimentary about NTL's customer service.

Do you get any kind of e-mail/webspace with that?

you get 15 email accounts and 55 MB of web space although i've only ever used one email and never used the space.

I've never had any probs with NTL customer Service - in fact - i was due to switch off my tv package and switch to SKY so they now give me my basic package for ?10 rather than ?18

what else .... no need to dial up. So long as your computer is on, you're online. This obviously requires a good firewall to be installed on the PC but there are plenty of decent free ones out there.

we have ntl broadband as well and are networked. They do not support networks, but we have not had any problems anyway and as the network is behind a NAT router with its own firewall we are quite safe from hackers. We also have the middle tariff. As I repair computers for folk I depend on Broadband for fast downloads - I would NEVER go back to dial-up.

Well I've signed up with Pipex.

Once I get my equipment through and get up and running I will let you know what I think of them.

Just got the following e-mail from Pipex.
Dear Pipex Customer

Further to your recent application to join the PIPEX Xtreme ADSL
service, I am afraid that we have received a formal response from BT informing us that your telephone line is unable to support an ADSL service at this time.

Because of the high frequencies required for transferring data at the
speeds available through ADSL, the quality of your telephone line and the distance of your premises from the local exchange will affect the availability of ADSL.

We are working very closely with BT to develop and improve the
availability of ADSL and will contact you should ADSL become available to you at some point in the future.

Back to the drawing board. :(
